How To Identify Eucalyptus

To the average observer, all eucalyptus species tend to look the same. However, if its distinct qualities are observed deeply, it can be quite simple to identify. Let us look at these distinct physical characteristics to differentiate between its different species.

Learn How to Identify Eucalyptus

identify eucalyptus
Eucalyptus is native to Australia. It belongs to the Myrtaceae family. There are numerous varieties of eucalyptus having a similar nomenclature. Trees within a eucalyptus grove grow near each other. By closely observing the physical characteristics of eucalyptus or gum trees, we can differentiate it from other tree species.

When identifying a eucalypt, you will come across a striking arrangement of leaf types in the form of:
• completely isolated and connate pairs of leaves
• closely packed and spirally arranged short linear leaves
• disjunct petiolate leaves

How to Identify Eucalyptus

• Leaves: Carefully examine the leaves of the tree. Eucalyptus has protracted and pointed leaves with leathery texture and flat sides. A closer look at the leaves, especially with a magnifying glass, will give you the opportunity to see the oil-secreting glands throughout the leaves.

• Branches: Closely observe the branches of the tree. Adult eucalyptus leaves are sickle-shaped, which alternate on the branches on which they grow.

• Flowers: Look for flowers budding from the branches. Eucalyptus flowers look like closed cups before they bloom and when they open, there are no petals but fluffy hair, which are actually flower stamens.

• Fruit: Explore the flower stems to look for fruit growth. Looking like a small, woody capsule, eucalyptus fruit grows until it splits open and ejects seeds.

• Bark: Touch the bark to determine its texture, which is usually tough and flaky. In most of the species, there is seasonal shedding of the outermost bark layer.

The amount of litter dropped by eucalyptus is huge. Eucalyptus litter is highly flammable and a fire hazard. This is because of rapid vaporization of oils that results in rapid ignition.

Inspection of Specimen

The process of identification begins with comprehensive external assessment in the field and ends with microscopic examination in the lab. Learning how to identify eucalyptus will be easy if the internal features of the plant are explored, which are relatively protected from outside elements and predators. It is easy to sample mallees, as the leaves and flowering structures are about a few inches tall and can be collected easily.

How to Choose Specimen

• Avoid using the largest or the smallest leaves as specimen; rather select typical leaves.

• Avoid using the fruit on the ground, as you never know whether they belong to eucalyptus genus.

• Avoid using those juvenile leaves to assess if you doubt their source, that is, whether they belong to eucalyptus genus.

It is natural to find a variety of juvenile leaves in a mixed species stand. Spend considerable time looking at both adult and juvenile growth in the stand. Further still, if you find difficulty in identification, then the last option is to grow the seedlings. Observe the seedling growth to identify the shape of the cotyledons and whether the leaves become disjunct in their juvenile days. Identify the shape of seedling leaves to see if they are stalked or stalkless.

Also take the plant height, the number of stems or trunks, the crown color and appearance into consideration. This will help you determine whether it is composed of juvenile or adult leaves. This will also help identify the general size of the leaves and whether the bark is rough or smooth.

Important Facts: How to Identify Eucalyptus

It is important to note that some eucalyptus species hardly develop true adult leaves; rather, they retain their juvenile leaf phase, with glaucous and rounded leaves.

• Adult leaves: The sickle-shaped adult leaves are arranged alternately on the branches, whose special glands contain volatile oils.

• Juvenile leaves: The grayish-colored juvenile leaves lie opposite to each other on the branches.

• Operculum: Operculum is a cap-like structure that protects petals and stamens at the bud stage. It is shed when the flowers open.

• Shape and size: Shape and size of pods also help in identifying species. Pods comprise innumerable seeds and some amount of infertile chaff. The seeds are larger and darker than the chaff.

For any kind of photographic record, always photograph trees early morning or late afternoon, though during winter, photography is the best if the sun is out so that the trunk or stems are in sunlight.

Diabetes Diet: Food for Diabetics

common diabetes myths: diabetes food is a myth
Here I come again with another piece on diabetes. As my research on diabetes and diabetes management continues, I will keep you posted on anything and everything I come up with. Today, I shall discuss importance of a dedicated diabetes diet.

Holistically following your diabetes diet list promises to be the best way to prevent yourself from the chain of complications often associated with this chronic disease. For diabetics, food choices are limited; however, you still need optimal amounts of nutrients and a balanced diet to stay fit and healthy.

In simple words, you can manage diabetes if you know:

  • what to eat
  • when to eat
  • how much to eat

According to NIDDK, Target Blood Glucose Levels for Diabetes on an empty stomach should be 70 to 130. After 1 to 2 hours post meals, glucose level sould be 180.

You should go for AIC test every 6 months, which will give you a figure of the bloog glucose levels in your body for a period of 3 months.

Why Healthy Eating is Important for Diabetics
Most diabetic patients are of the opinion that if they are able to control their sugar intake, that's it, forgetting the importance of diabetes diet. Diet is crucial for health of diabetics. Undoubtedly controlling sugar intake is the key, but following a diabetic diet is equally essential to keep your blood glucose levels normal, keep yourself from other ailments, such as heart diseases and obesity, and maintain an ideal weight.

For diabetic patients, a proper diet is crucial to maintaining optimal health. Your diet should be a blend of proteins, carbohydrates, and fat while keeping a quantity check on all these important elements. Carbohydrates are an essential part of a nutritious diabetes diet and can significantly influence blood glucose levels.

Components of Diabetes Diet
For a diabetic patient, it all begins with choosing a proper diabetes diet. It is important to be careful in choosing food that would not raise your blood glucose levels drastically. Though there is no perfect food or diet for diabetes, the American Diabetes Association has come up with the following suggestions of diabetes foods that can help diabetics manage the disease:

1. Green leafy vegetables must form an essential component of a diabetes diet. For diabetics, the ADA recommends green beans, spinach, broccoli, squash, radish, lettuce, tomato, cauliflower, carrot, and cabbage.

2. Fruits, including grapefruit, berries, apples, rose apple, peaches, oranges, pears, strawberries, tangerines, and plum, have a low glycemic index than desserts and thus should form part of a diabetes diet.

3. Cereals, whole grains are considered good for diabetes patients. Harvard School of Public Health researchers suggest that a diet rich in rye, barley, wheat, brown rice, bran, and oats helps minimize the risk of diabetes.

4. Dairy products, including low fat milk, yogurt, reduced fat sour cream, can be taken by diabetics.  According to a study published in the December 21 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine, whole fat dairy products have certain properties that reduce risk of diabetes.

5. Protein-rich foods, including fish, tofu, dried beans, nuts, lobster, cod, tuna, shrimp, salmon, should be taken in moderate amounts by diabetic patients.Studies show that too much of protein intake may result in insulin resistance, a key risk factor in diabetes.

Increase Your Intake of Fiber Foods
Do you know what are the best foods for diabetes?

Well, frankly, there is no specific diabetes food out there. It all comes down to improving your metabolism.

According to American Diabetes Association, an ideal diabetes diet is one that follows a 60:30:10 ratio for carbohydrates, fat, and protein, respectively.

Carbohydrate foods comprising dietary fiber, such as vegetables, whole grains, and fruits, are encouraged for diabetics, as these help control diabetes-related risk. Your diabetes diet should comprise a good portion of whole grain carbs, which are a good source of fiber and digested slowly. As a result, blood sugar levels can be controlled. Scientists believe that dietary fiber reduces the body's need for insulin, since it helps maintain blood sugar levels. Besides, it helps with weight loss and lowers risk of colon cancer.

A registered dietician is the best person to suggest you an appropriate nutrition plan for diabetes. There are several myths associated with diabetes diet; however, the best way to stay fit for a diabetic patient is to limit their intake, depending on individual needs.

Successful diabetes management is about making timely assessment of your blood sugar levels and choosing a diabetes diet accordingly.

Bottom Line: Importance of Diabetes Diet List
The importance of diabetes diet list lies in the benefits a diabetic derives from it. With no single diabetes diet list benefiting all diabetics equally, the selection of an appropriate diet depends on one's physical needs and sugar levels. A dietitian is the most appropriate person to recommend a diet depending on individual needs of a diabetic.

We will soon be coming up with diabetes recipes here. Keep watching the space.

Are All Muslims Terrorists?

Ever since I started to understand what terrorism was and how it was affecting peace around the globe, I have been trying to find its root cause. However, I often find all fingers pointing toward Muslims. We hear loud cries of Islamic terrorism - words like Islamic Jehad (Jihad) keep reverberating everywhere. Most people have started calling that Muslims are terrorists. But even as a non-Muslim, I have deep reverence for the Qoran and have read several of its verses - nowhere have I found the Holy Book of Muslims inciting its followers to wage a bloody battle against innocents. Then why are the loud cries of Muslims are terrorists or Islamic terrorism heard everywhere?

I believe Muslims are not terrorists or for that matter, all Muslims are not terrorists.

Sleeping Too Little or Too Much: You Are At Equal Health Risk

sleeping problem

If you are suffering from insomnia, sleep apnea, or any kind of sleep disorder, leaving you without adequate sleep of six hours at the minimum, you are at more than usual risk of health disorders. If you love to sleep more than nine hours at a stretch every night, you face the equal risk of health problems.

We are all aware that sleeping less puts us at the risk of hypertension, cardiovascular problems, and psychological disorders. Can you imagine that sleeping more is equally harmful? Those sleeping long hours are at enhanced risk of becoming subject to similar diabetics and diseases that bring them at equal footing with those deprived of sleep.

Research Study on Sleeping

According to a recent report published in the journal SLEEP, sleeping more than 10 hours is equally harmful as sleeping less than six hours. Sponsored and supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the nodal US agency looking after public health problems in that country, the report warns of diabetes, anxiety, and coronary heart diseases in adults above 45 due to long sleeping hours.

Over 54,000 people 45 years or above were studied by researchers. About 64 percent were found to be optimal sleepers between six and nine hours, leaving 31 percent lacking adequate sleep of six hours while five percent went beyond nine hours of sleeping in their everyday life.

The report highlights frequent mental distress, higher obesity, diabetes, strokes, and more incidence of coronary heart disease in those lacking or going beyond seven to nine hours of sleep in 24 hours. The research found that these diseases are more with those longing for more sleep.

"Some of the relationships between unhealthy sleep durations and chronic diseases were partially explained by frequent mental distress and obesity," says Janet B Croft, a senior chronic disease epidemiologist at the Population Health division of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and leader of the research group.

sleep deprivation
The publication recommends a close monitoring of sleep health of those suffering from chronic health disorders, as sleeping hours have a bearing on their mental health and body weight, which influence progress of treatment. Seven to nine hours of sleeping in 24 hours enables to reap health benefits and defeat chronic conditions. But getting less or more than these hours may significantly impact your quality of life and disease symptoms.

How To Improve Sleep
The prime reason for sleeping problems is stress on the body, which causes a number of other problems, including weight gain, hormone imbalance, hair loss, premature aging, and lowered immune function.

Foods To Improve Sleep
To get quality sleep, make the following diet adjustments and these foods to your everyday meals:

  • High Antioxidant Foods, including vegetables, green tea, high nutrient fruits, help in hormone production. Not only this, antioxidants also fight free radicals in the body and remove toxins that can obstruct sleep.
  • Healthy fats, including coconut oil, eggs, pasture raised meats, provide your body with building blocks that are essential for the production of sleep hormones.
  • Quality Proteins and vegetables will prepare your body for sleep.
It is important for better sleep that you have your meals at least a couple of hours before your sleeping regimen. This will allow time for your body to digest the food. A well-balanced diet will help your sleeping routine- ensuring proper sleep.

too much sleep
Foods that Disrupt Sleep
Vegetable oils, carbohydrates and sugars can cause a spike in blood glucose levels and create hormonal problem. This can result in sleeplessness in the middle of the night.

  • Fatty foods, such as steak, not only raise cholesterol, but also increase obesity risk, these are digested slowly by the body and thus cause circadian rhythm problems, especially if eaten just before bedtime. Not only this, high-fat diets are linked to sleep apnea.
  • Broccoli is regarded a health-friendly vegetable, but eaten before bedtime, it can cause all sorts of sleep problems. Cauliflower and broccoli, eaten too close to bedtime, can keep your body working for long hours in order to digest the slow-to-digest fiber.

Diabetes Mellitus: How Diabetes is Affecting Our Kids

The graph of diabetes mellitus is rising steadily as a result of unhealthy eating habits, sedentary lifestyle, and hereditary factors.

What is Diabetes Mellitus in Children
Diabetes, known for its slow death phenomenon, has not spared even our kids. An increasing number of children are affected by the syndrome due to unhealthy eating habits and inactive lifestyle. Also known as juvenile diabetes, diabetes mellitus makes children dependent on insulin doses, as their pancreas are not able to synthesize insulin - key to converting glucose into energy. If we go by the American Diabetes Association statistics, five of every 3,000 kids in the United State are suffering from diabetes mellitus. The disease affects more children from African American, American Indian, Asians, and Hispanics.

Diabetes Mellitus in Children
In children, the most common cause of type 1 diabetes is the destruction of pancreatic cells, which is the result of lifestyle and nutritional changes. A chronic metabolic disorder, diabetes mellitus begins at a tender age of 6-7 years, primarily affecting children with genetic predisposition.

On the other hand, type 2 diabetes is the result of obesity and insulin resistance. Type 1 diabetes is more common than type 2 diabetes mellitus in the US; however, the incidence of T2DM is increasing at a rapid pace with the increased number of obesity cases. It is expected that T2DM cases will exceed T1DM in 10 years.

Obesity or excess fat interferes with the body's metabolism, thus affecting its ability to regulate blood suagr.

Diabetes Mellitus in Children: Symptoms
  • Polydipsia or excessive thirst: The accumulation of glucose in blood dehydrates the body, leading to a feeling of thirst. As a result, kids develop a tendency to drink more fluids.
  • Polyuria: As with diabetic adults, even kids with diabetes urinate more often due to the intake of more fluids because of dehydration.
  • Polyphagia or increased appetite: Children experience a feeling of excessive hunger caused by energy insufficiency due to the lack of insulin.
  • Sudden weight loss: Children may unexpectedly lose weight in spite of a good appetite, as their cells are not able to store energy. Moreover, there is lack of formation of fat or muscle mass.
  • Ketones: Children suffering from high blood glucose also experience high level of ketones in urine.
  • Weakness and irritability: Diabetic kids experience fatigue and tiredness more often due to lack of energy.
  • Fruity breath: Children with diabetes mellitus experience fruity smell in breath due to an increased number of ketones in their body, which burns fat for energy in place of sugar because of lack of insulin production.
  • Unconsciousness: The severe shortage of sugar in brain cells may make the affected kids prone to frequent spells of unconsciousness.

Prevention & Treatment of Diabetes Mellitus
Timely recognition of diabetes mellitus symptoms is the key to early diagnosis of the disease and timely treatment. It is the responsibility of parents to make sure their kids are served a healthy diet on the dining table. They should inculcate the habit of healthy eating in children. A diet rich in fiber is particularly good for diabetes.

Insulin doses must be administered to patients experiencing excessively high glucose levels, which will act instantly to lower blood sugar. Regular monitoring of glucose levels is crucial to preventing any future complications.

Children should be made aware of

  • the dangers of unhealthy eating habits
  • the repercussions of an inactive lifestyle
  • the importance of healthy food habits
  • the need to eliminate obesity
A blend of healthy eating habits and active lifestyle is the key to keeping blood sugar levels under control. So teach your kids to stay active. Why not ask them to walk to their friend’s place or cycle to school in order to burn calories?

Understanding Diabetes: Ketosis vs Ketoacidosis

diabetes symptoms

With both my mother and father-in law suffering from diabetes, I can understand how difficult it can be to live with the disease. Unfortunately, every day seems to be a challenge for them!

So I have decided to share some facts about diabetes that some of you may not be aware of.

The words Ketosis and Ketoacidosis are linked to diabetes; however, only a few of us understand that there is a significant difference between both.

Ketosis vs Ketoacidosis
Ketosis and Ketoacidosis are sometimes confused with each other, since they possess the same root word. These are two conditions linked to body metabolism and blood sugar.

What is Ketosis
A condition in which your body begins to burn fat for energy because of lack of carbohydrates is known as Ketosis. Typically in individuals on a low-carb diet, inadequate intake of carbohydrates causes the body to start using the stored glucose in the liver. Once the glucose in liver gets exhausted, the body starts producing glucose from muscle mass and starts breaking down fat in order to meet its energy needs for normal functioning. As a result, more energy is released into the bloodstream and ketones are produced as a byproduct. This causes an accumulation of ketone molecules in the blood, thus making it acidic. Resultantly, the kidneys get irritated and start flushing out ketones through urine.

On the other hand, dietary ketosis is a helpful process that supports your weight loss goals by burning fat in the process in order to gain energy. With ketosis being a diet-induced process, it cannot be considered harmful, unlike the life-threatening condition of ketoacidosis.

What is Diabetic Ketoacidosis
It is a condition affecting type 1 diabetics, who have inadequate insulin levels in their bodies to process glucose properly. The insufficiency of insulin leads to several health complications, such as failure of the body to use sugar as a fuel source. Instead it is used to compensate the reduced energy levels. As a result, the body begins breaking down fat, which causes ketones. high blood glucose levels and inadequate insulin cause acidic ketones, which result in chemical imbalance and produce life-threatening symptoms.

Some children may also suffer from diabetic ketoacidosis as a result of undiagnosed diabetic mellitus. Diabetic ketoacidosis symptoms include:
  • Flushed skin
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Excessive thirst
  • Restlessness
  • Confusion
  • Fruity breath due to ketones

Proper diagnosis will help in timely intervention and treatment. If left untreated, diabetic ketoacidosis might develop into diabetic coma.

Adults may experience the following diabetic Ketoacidosis symptoms:

  • Decreased appetite
  • Illness
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Dry mouth
  • Dehydration
  • Shortness of breath

The condition typically affects type 1 diabetes patients; however, some type 2 diabetes patients can develop this condition due to prolonged illness. Diabetic ketoacidosis is usually the result of prolonged illness, surgery, infection, or heart attack.

Ketosis vs Ketoacidosis: Key Differences
Now that we have understood the concept of Ketosis and Ketoacidosis, it is clear how both terms differ. While ketosis, in most cases, is a diet-induced condition that results in the body breaking down fats and fatty acids to burn energy because of inadequate carbohydrates, diabetic ketoacidosis is a condition when the body cannot use sugar to produce energy due to lack of insulin and thus uses its muscle mass, fats, and fatty acids.

Ketosis and ketoacidosis cause ketones production in the body.

In ketosis, there is no harm to the body due to ketones, as insulin manages their production, unlike ketoacidosis, wherein ketones become extremely acidic due to excessively high sugar levels and insufficient insulin. This causes chemical imbalance in the body.

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a serious medical condition due to excessively large blood glucose and low insulin levels in the body, which requires immediate medical attention. A person affected with diabetic ketoacidosis might suffer from blindness or loss of limbs.

One of the most threatening complications of ketoacidosis, diabetic coma is the most threatening result of diabetic ketoacidosis.

Ketoacidosis Prevention
It is important to holistically follow your diabetes management program by taking regular doses of insulin, managing your blood glucose levels, eating a healthy diet, and following an exercise regimen.

Putting Green in Your Backyard

This article is your guide to know how to build backyard putting green. If you have enough space in your backyard, you can very well turn your dream into reality and get your dream putting green in your backyard. Location, slope, soil mixture, type of grass, drainage, irrigation are important factors that help in building putting green in your backyard. To cut down the maintenance cost, you can opt for synthetic grass. This will also keep pests and weeds away.

Putting green in your backyard is a great alternative to your personal golf course. And you would be surprised to know that you can lay the golf turf on your own. If you are a golf enthusiast, read on to understand the tips to build putting green in your backyard.

Know How to Build Backyard Putting Green
Your love for golf would certainly encourage you to know how to build a putting green in the backyard. With a putting green in your backyard, you can practice your short game without having to pay the golf course for the same. Building a putting green can certainly be an enjoyable activity. When you learn about the concept of how to build a putting green in your backyard, you will come across many factors that must be considered to go ahead with the process, such as slope, soil, exposure, location, type of grass, and much more.

Essentials Factors to be Considered to Build Putting Green in Your Backyard

Before you actually start building your putting green, you must have hand digging tools, plastic pipes, probe, planers, irrigation tubes, soil, and seeds. Besides, type of home turf, grass, type of movers, climate, and terrain are also key determinants.

Location

·         High elevation – The putting green must not be located in a depression or low area. Building the putting green above the ground level will ensure proper drainage of water.
·         Sunlight - The putting green requires adequate sunlight for the optimum growth of the turf.
·         Aeration – Aeration is essential to keep the putting green healthy and in good shape. The air holes in the soil help the roots to breathe, thus preventing the burning of the putting green. For a golfer, air holes in their favorite golf course are a frustrating sight, but these disappear within two weeks of the aeration process.
Construction
A proper drainage system will ensure that no puddles will appear to make the green unusable. The green should be built above the ground level so that water is able to run off quickly. It is even better to build the putting green in a sloped fashion.
·         The root of the putting green must be sandy and be able to withstand the foot traffic. It will ensure that water will not sink into it and can withstand the regular traffic.
·         Soil selection is important for the putting green construction. Though any type of soil is suitable for building a backyard putting green, a sandy loamy soil is ideal. For root zone mix, the soil must have about 60 percent sand and 5-20 percent clay. Well drained and slightly sandy soil is ideal for laying down a putting green. Fine gravel, very coarse sand, medium sand, silt, clay are important particles for the soil of the root zone.
·         Creeping bent grass is the best variety of grass recommended for putting greens. Its denseness and mowing qualities have made it the most extensively used grass for putting greens. With a fine texture and thick density, bent grass is deep green in color and known as one of the luxury grasses of the cool season.

Maintenance

·         Mow your putting green at 3/16 to 1/4 inch more than four times per week.
·         Fertilize your putting green with 0.5 lb nitrogen every 1,000 sq. ft.
·         Water the green in the early morning, especially when the green shows signs of drought.
·         Produce a dense grass so that it is no longer vulnerable to pests or insects.
·         Apply a layer of 1/8 inch thick topdressing of screened soil above the putting surface.
·         Use a synthetic grass preferably in order to cut down the need to maintain the greens. Though it will cost more in the beginning, it will save you enough time and money on maintenance. It will also prevent decaying and pest problems, which are common in case of any real grass.

Cost
If you are seriously interested to know how to build a putting green in your backyard and its cost, then you will be happy to note that you do not have to spend much. About 1,000 square feet of grass green will cost you a few hundred dollars only.

How to Build Backyard Putting Green Procedure
·         Mark the highest spot where the putting green must be built.
·         Use a shovel or bobcat to ensure that the putting area is free from poor soil, lumps, stones, and shrubs. If the area is not cleared properly, it will impede your shots.
·         Lay an inch of layer of fresh soil. If you prefer starting with a layer of soil for better drainage, lay out the top soil thereafter.
·         Provide a good irrigation system, as the grass in the upper layer of soil needs water to grow. Do ensure that you water the grass regularly, for putting green grass requires much care.
·         Consult a greens keeper, who can regularly suggest how to take care of your putting green, particularly the chemical treatments required in this regard.

Pomegranate Tree Care Guidelines

Punica Granatum or pomegranate tree care tips are necessary to ensure a good plant. Though you might think pomegranate tree care is an onerous task, yet the fruits of your labor during the summers and winters will be very sweet. Apart from blessing you with a juicy, sweet fruit, pomegranate tree decorates your garden.

Ideal Time to Plant a Pomegranate Tree is Spring
Spring is the appropriate time to plant pomegranate tree. Cool winters and hot summers are conducive for the growth of the pomegranate tree. The ideal temperature for the pomegranate fruit to bloom lies between 30F and 90F. If temperatures fall below 15F, the tree can sustain significant damage and is less likely to bloom fully.

Tips to Care for A Pomegranate Tree
Follow the pomegranate tree care guidelines to enhance the beauty of your garden and enjoy a juicy fruit in the fall.

Loamy Soil is Ideal for the Growth of a Pomegranate Tree
Though pomegranate tree grows well in almost all types of soil, calcium-rich loamy soil is ideal for its growth. Dig the hole and loosen the dirt to ensure that enough moisture seeps into the soil for the roots to grow. Ensure that the location is naturally well drained; otherwise, the result will be rotten roots and even death of the tree.

Adequate Exposure to Sunlight is a Must to Ensure Fruit Ripening
Ensure that the pomegranate tree is planted where it will receive at least eight hours of sunlight a day. The more the sunlight falling on the tree, the better will be its growth. Entire day's exposure to sun and heat will result in sweet fruit. Contrarily, if grown in a shady area, the result will be stunted growth and bitter fruit.

Fertilization is a Must to Ensure a Good Harvest
Mix granular tree fertilizer and compost with the soil and ensure that the soil level is even so that the roots do not show up. If you aim at a good harvest, ensure that fertilizers are released into the soil at least two times, that is, in the spring and after the harvest.

Periodic Watering is Essential to Maintain Plant Growth
Watering the pomegranate tree thoroughly immediately after the initial planting is an essential pomegranate tree care tip. Usually one inch of water in the initial stage will suffice. The second time to water the plant will be when the soil has dried out and requires watering.

In fact, the pomegranate tree requires watering once or twice a week, because dry, semi-arid conditions are ideal for its growth. Increase the water quantity to one and a half inches during hot summers. In the summer season, water the tree two to three times a week would be ideal for better growth.

Protection From Pests, Weeds, Bugs is Essential to Save the Tree
A pomegranate tree attracts a number of pests, weeds, and even bugs. Pests and weeds can choke any plant and thwart its growth, and pomegranate tree is no exception. Bugs can easily destroy any fruit and ruin your labor. The pomegranate butterfly lays eggs on the flowers, which can destroy the entire crop. Pesticides are essential to prevent this larvae growth.

Thus it is an essential pomegranate tree care tip to offer it full protection from pests, weeds, bugs, and any disease that might affect the growth. This is vital to reap the benefits of your labor throughout the spring and summer.

Careful Pruning is Vital to Prevent Fruit Damage
Pruning is as vital for pomegranate as for any other tree, with the only difference being the method. Pruning should be done carefully, particularly for the first three years. Branches should be carefully pruned annually so that a large number of new shoots grow on all sides. This will also ensure that no uneven development of the branches takes place and the plant emerges as a well framed tree.

After the third year, remove any shoots, suckers, or dead branches. Cut off any stems growing too close to the main branches but keep the ones that sucker from the base, which will give your pomegranate the look of a multi-stemmed tree.

Pomegranate tree care will be easy if the tree maintains a shorter height, thus ensure that you prune the top off so that you can easily harvest the fruit. In this regard, it is a better option to use bypass pruners to check if the seed is ripe.

Harvest Before Complete Ripening of the Fruit to Prevent Spoilage
August is the best time to harvest pomegranates prior to their becoming fully ripe because completely ripened pomegranate fruit often splits open. Most of the fruits get destroyed this way. Thus don’t wait for the fruit to ripen completely and relish the fruits of your labor.
