Garlic Benefits for Health Counter Cancer, Heart Problems

garlic uses

Garlic health benefits seem to surprise most of us who see it as only a spice. Well, there is more to garlic than being spice alone. The best thing about garlic is that it can be used as cooked and raw both and even as dry powder.  Yes, it does smell bad, but if you look into the garlic benefits, you will be surprised to find that this is a wonder spice that can work wonders for your health, from adding a flavor to your recipes to treating several ills that affect our health, thanks to our modern lives.

Say No To Cancer With Garlic

Also called “stinking rose,” garlic is one of the favorite natural ingredients found in nature’s pharmacy. Its use as a treatment for various respiratory problems, worms, intestinal disorders, wounds, flatulence, and skin diseases has been known since ages for over 5,000 years. Garlic use first came in the news in World War II, when it was used as an antiseptic for the treatment of wounds and prevent gangrene from spreading.

Cancer continues to remain a dreaded word. Being rich in antioxidants, garlic helps the body fight off free radicals and kills cancer cells. It may strengthen the immune system. Test tube studies have shown that garlic kills cancer cells. Research reveals that those eating garlic regularly, either in raw or cooked form, is less likely to get colon and stomach cancer.

In a study conducted on 50 people, who were diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic, colorectal, or liver cancer, there was significant improvement in the immune activity after they took garlic extract for a period of 6 months.

According to a research conducted at the Jiangsu Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, those who weekly ate raw garlic two times reported 44 percent lower risk of lung cancer. Researchers concluded that “garlic may potentially serve as a chemo-preventive agent for lung cancer."

Garlic is rich in organo-sulfur compounds that are known as effective in eradicating brain tumor cells.

Medical University of South Carolina researchers note in journal Cancer that garlic comprises three pure organo-sulfur compounds, including DAS, DADS, and DATS, which are highly effective in controlling the growth of malignant brain cancer cells, with DATS being the most effective of all.

Garlic is also known to protect your body from the damaging effects of free radicals.

Garlic Is A Powerful Antibiotic

Garlic comprises Diallyl sulfide compound, which is 100 times effective than the most popular antibiotics available. Its potent antibiotic properties fight Campylobacter bacterium, which is known to cause intestinal infections, as per a study in the Antimicrobial Chemotherapy Journal.

garlic antibiotic
In India, garlic is widely popular for its antibiotic properties, which helps prevent food poisoning.

It is known to kill E. coli bacteria, salmonella, and staphylococcus, reducing the risk of food poisoning.

Save Your Heart

In India, we often swallow garlic with water on empty stomach to reduce plaque development and bad cholesterol levels in our bodies. It is rich in Diallyl trisulfide, which is effective as a heart failure treatment and helps protect the heart after an attack as well as during cardiac surgery, according to Emory University School of Medicine scientists. The garlic oil component is also known as safer than hydrogen sulfide gas to benefit the heart and protect it from damage.

Laboratory experiments presented in the November 2011 American Heart Association (AHA) Scientific Sessions conference in Orlando show that mice receiving diallyl sulfide after heart attack suffered almost 61% less heart damage compared to their untreated companions. Garlic uses are profound for the heart. It is also known to reduce the risk of atherosclerosis.

   Other Garlic Remedies

  • If you have diabetes, garlic could hold the key to protecting you from cardiomyopathy, according to a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. The leading cause of diabetes death, cardiomyopathy is a chronic disease of the heart muscle that becomes abnormally stiffened, enlarged, and thickened. The study concluded that garlic oil has a huge potential for protecting hearts of diabetes from cardiomyopathy.
  • For a severe bout of cold and flu, taking small amounts of garlic could help relieve you from the infection. The best part about garlic remedies is that it does not have any major side effects and reduces frequency of flu significantly. Two to three cloves of raw garlic a day could hold the key to a speedy recovery from cold.
  • If you are unhappy about the pimple marks, blemishes on your skin, then garlic can help. It works as a blood cleanser, since it is a rich antioxidant. The herbal antibiotic may be used topically for acne and warts treatment. Rub garlic clove directly onto the affected area to experience relief from skin marks. However, people with sensitive skin might want to refrain from using garlic, as they may get a “garlic burn.”
  • If you have earache, garlic can work as a remedy. Frying two-three garlic cloves in mustard oil and then dropping the warm oil in your ears can help relieve ear pain.
  • If your non-stop hair loss is a concern, use garlic remedy to treat your problem. Rich in allicin, it is an effective treatment for hair fall. Rub sliced garlic cloves on your scalp, and enjoy the benefits of this natural remedy.
  • If a loved one is suffering from psoriasis, garlic can be used as a remedy, thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties.  Enjoy a rash-free skin by rubbing garlic oil over the affected area.
  • If you have an athlete's foot, use garlic for its anti-fungal properties and heal yourself naturally.

Garlic uses for weight loss are also highlighted by a few researchers, though more research is under way in this regard.

Garlic changes color

Yesterday, I decided to make garlic pickle with apple cider vinegar. All I did was take a small bottle, add ACV and blanched garlic cloves to it. Today, to my surprise, the garlic had changed to turquoise! I was wondering whether this is due to some chemical reaction and if such garlic is safe to use.  My Internet research shows that it is normal for garlic to change color in an acidic solution, as the sulphrous compounds in the herb react with the acids and cause the color change in garlic. Such garlic is safe for use!

Honey Benefits for Health

Honey benefits heath in more ways than one. The world’s oldest medicine, honey is blessed with excellent healing qualities.  A product of the hardworking bee, honey has been widely in use for beauty, healing, nutrition, and skin care. While refined sugar is dangerous to health in innumerable ways, nature has blessed us with this amazingly sweet yet safer alternative to processed sugar! However, please remember to buy only raw, organic honey to reap maximum benefits.
Hippocrates, renowned as the father of medicine, believed that honey made a great natural remedy for several ills, calling it the great golden healer. Roman lesions used honey as a topical treatment to heal their wounds, while in Egypt, honey was surprisingly used as a form of currency.
In the words of Hippocrates, “Honey causes heat, cleans sores and ulcers, softens hard ulcers of the lips and heals carbuncles and running sores.”

Honey does make a great sugar substitute. So if you are planning to get your sugar intake under control, you can replace refined sugar with honey in most recipes.

I have come up with some recipes that taste great even with the addition of honey. Try almond butter kulfi, which does not use cream or sugar, but does make a lip-smacking delight.

Health Benefits of Honey

Honey nourishes the body and is one of the most powerful ways to protect and improve health. The benefits of honey are not just limited to its taste. In fact, it won’t be wrong to say that honey is:
  • ·         an energy booster
  • ·         an immunity builder
  • ·         an allergy buster
  • ·         a natural remedy for several ills
  • ·         a weight loss wonder

Take A tablespoon A Day To Boost Energy

Strange it might sound, but true. Honey is a good natural source of carbohydrates that not only boosts energy, but also provides strength to your body. So if you wonder whether you should be taking those energy boosters, think again. Honey offers a great natural substitute, thanks to its effectiveness in reducing muscle fatigue and instantly boosting performance and stamina. You won’t feel fatigued during physical activity if you take a tablespoon before leaving for your workout. Honey contains glucose that is absorbed quickly and gives an instant boost to your energy levels. Not only this, honey is also known to keep blood glucose levels constant as opposed to other types of sugar.

Kick-Start Your Day With A Dose of Honey To Boost Immunity

With its antioxidant and anti-bacterial properties, honey works great in improving the digestive system.  Rich in vitamins and minerals, raw, unheated, and organic honey boosts the immune system and protects your body from bacteria. You would be surprised to know that honey is one of the most effective remedies for cold and flu symptoms, including sore throat, cough, and congestion.  A spoon a day taken with warm water gives a magical boost to your immune system. For an extra boost, do not forget to add cinnamon powder and lemon juice to the warm water and honey mixture. This excellent cleansing tonic is just the right way to start your day in order to stay healthy and ward off any disease.

One Spoonful of Honey to Treat Allergies

One of the unknown benefits of honey is its use as a remedy for allergy.  Though no study has clearly proved that honey is effective against allergies, it is believed that this natural sweetener vaccinates the body against allergens. [i]
Honey contains a range of pollen spores that are known to cause allergy. By taking honey regularly in small doses, the body becomes accustomed to them, thus reducing the risk of immune system response to the pollens. Now you must be wondering whether directly ingesting these pollen spores causes any allergic reaction. Well, the answer is NO - since there is low concentration of pollen spores in honey, no trigger symptoms are reported in a person despite the production of antibodies in the body. This means, you won't experience any allergic reaction.

Join A Honey Regimen to Ward Off Infections, Ills

·         Sore throat: Honey is an effective remedy for sore throat, thanks to its anti-microbial properties. It kills certain bacteria that are known to cause infections. This is one health benefit of honey that has proved quite helpful in treating my sore throat. Whenever I feel the first symptoms of cough, I start taking a tablespoon of honey with warm water. I take this simple concoction every 2-3 hours and experience relief from itching and sore throat.

·
Cuts and burns: As an antiseptic, honey inhibits the growth of certain bacteria. Not only this, honey has long been used as a first aid treatment for burns, cuts, and wounds, helping keep external wounds clean and prevent infection. It works by absorbing moisture from air and promotes healing. As an anti-inflammatory agent, honey reduces pain, swelling, and scarring. So the next time you hurt yourself, use honey as an external wound dressing aid.

·         Weight loss: Health benefits of honey also include its effectiveness in flushing fat from the body. The concoction of lemon, honey, and warm water is a big detoxifier, which removes toxins and detoxifies the lover.

·         Digestion: As a probiotic, honey has a laxative effect that keeps the digestive and immune system health and helps fight bloating and constipation. Try consuming tea with lemon to aid in digestion. Take 1 to 2 teaspoons on an empty stomach before meal three times a day to treat ulcers and assist in healing.

·
Healthy skin: Honey benefits skin in several ways. It works as a great moisturizer, locking in moisture. If you suffer from dry skin, a regular application honey blended with turmeric on your skin will leave your skin soft and fresh. As an antibacterial aid, honey works great for acne.

·         Sleeplessness: Honey is your best cure for insomnia. If you are unable to enjoy a good night’s sleep, a glass of hot milk blended with one or 2 tb of honey makes a great insomnia remedy to calm the soul and promote good quality sleep.[ii]

·         Cholesterol: Surprisingly, health benefits of honey also include its effectiveness as a remedy for high Cholesterol. Research suggests that honey reduces cholesterol numbers. A research study published in “The Scientific World Journal” had concluded that honey does reduce cholesterol readings.  On top of it, the study stated that honey raises HDL or good cholesterol levels in the body. [iii] Mix cinnamon powder with a tablespoon of honey to revitalize arteries and veins to manage cholesterol problem. [iv]

No Honey Dose for Infants

Despite so many health benefits of honey, experts advise against the use of honey  for infants and pregnant women. Experts claim that it is not safe for pregnant women due to the pollen in it. Infants below 12 months of age might face severe allergy reactions when given a dose of raw honey.

Simple Tips for Home Decoration

home decoration
Home decoration comes easy to those who are open to making a few adjustments here and there. If you are looking for a relaxing ambiance at your own haven, you can easily make your home a more beautiful place to live in. By adding a few décor elements here and there and making little adjustments, you can add color and definition to your room and make it an even cozier paradise for your family. If you are an admirer of rustic décor, you might like this explicitly decorated home.

Home Decoration Ideas

You might like to begin your home decorating project by choosing wall décor items. Adorn the walls with framed or unframed art, wall mirrors, sculptures, tapestries, silver trays, or your own work of art as eye-catching ornaments. You might want to choose a wallpaper to create a focal wall. Augment your windows with window film or art glass, or try custom blinds and shades. Remember, the best wall treatments should not fade away in the background but stand out.

Furnishing

When comfort is the focus in your living room decorating project, you cannot forget to include comfortable furniture. The casual yet sophisticated room should have a comfy setting, with a comfortable bed and sofa with a rustic edge.

Vintage Trunk

There is always something special about using a vintage trunk as an accent piece in a living room, adding charm and nostalgia to your space. While you might like to set it in front of the bed to make a striking focal point, with ample storage space to store blankets, sheets, bed covers, or pillow covers, it might also be positioned as a coffee table in the living room as an exquisite accent piece. You might want to choose a trunk with a striking contrast in color and design to the rest of the home décor to make it stand out from the setting.

If the trunk color contrasts with the storage cabinet while complementing the rest of the room decor, it will certainly add interest. The vintage trunk will not only act as a coffee table, but also as a place to display some of your favorite decorations, adding a little more charm to the living room decoration.

The home decoration looks well balanced and cozy. And if there is a fireplace in the room, it will make the atmosphere more warm and inviting. Place a few decoration items from your vintage collection on the fireplace mantel to make it stand out and create an even more rustic feel.

Rug

Choose a rug that complements the entire setting, and goes well with the vintage trunk. Use a rug that sits perfectly on the floor and matches well with the sofa and wall treatment. No great striking contrast, but a soothing effect on the eye! Such a home decoration setting forms a cozy, inviting lounge area.

You might paint the wall and ceilings in neutral tones to sit well with the rest of the setting and create an elegant focal point.

Bottom Line

Your home decoration project is all about testing your creativity by experimenting with the setting or making a few adjustments to your living room. A change always looks better to the eye. You might want to add a candle stand beside the sofa as a corner accent in place of something that takes more space and blocks the outside view. The large windows in this room are an open invitation to natural light, and you won’t want to place anything that prevents light from traveling in. Allow your home decoration to glow in natural light and rejoice!

Amazing Apple Cide Vinegar Benefits

Apple cide vinegar is being promoted as a wonder health supplement. To what extent is it right to dub it as a health wonder?

Well, according to a number of studies, this type of vinegar made from fermented apples does work wonders for health. But remember, most of these studies have been conducted on rats.

Nevertheless I decided to research about the apple cider vinegar benefits after I heard some of my relatives using it as a remedy for cholesterol and heart problems. Indeed I was quite surprised about it when I heard about the benefits for the first time. But I must be clear here that they do not take apple cider vinegar alone; rather, blend it with garlic, ginger, and honey and take it in diluted form. We will talk about the remedy later. Let’s see what other benefits of apple cide vinegar are.  The best thing about ACV is that it hasn’t yet been associated with any side effects! Wahooooo!!

Recently, the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) published a report in the Journal of Food Science on health benefits of certain types of vinegar, including ACV.

Apple Cide Vinegar Benefits

apple cider vinegar as an energy drink
Surprisingly, apple cide vinegar comprises more than thirty essential nutrients, several enzymes, half a dozen vitamins and minerals and crucial amino acids. Besides, it has a good amount of pectin for a healthy heart.
ACV has been in use since 400 BC, thanks to its vitamin, mineral, pectin, and beta-carotene content, all of which are crucial for the human body to stay fit and healthy. Made of fresh organic apples, apple cide vinegar is known to have terrific powers to eradicate toxic wastes from the body, helping the skin glow. (So all you girls out there, are you going to give it a try for that much-needed glow on your face?)

Helps Tummy Troubles

Looking for some relief for those stomach cramps? Take apple cider vinegar diluted in water. and honey. If you are suffering from diarrhea and a bacterial infection is the root cause of your problem, ACV will provide relief, thanks to its antibiotic properties. Moreover, it is known to contain pectin, which helps soothe intestinal spasms. Add 1 tablespoon of ACV to drinking water to get rid of stomach problems.

Relieves From Sunburns

With apple cide vinegar in your kitchen, you never have to use those sunscreens again! Yes, this is no rhetoric. ACV benefits skin and can be used to effectively cure sunburns. Add a few drops of ACV to water and enjoy your bath. It will not only have a relaxing impact on your body, but also relieve you from sunburns. I have researched about it, but skeptical about using ACV topically. Has anybody done so?

Weight Loss Remedy

ACV benefits(http://healthfoodxdrinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Amazing-Health-Benefits-of-Apple-Cider-Vinegar1.jpg)
Add a few teaspoon of ACV to your drinking water and drink it every morning. It will work wonders on your weight and the noticeable results will be apparent in a few weeks. This is something that I have been doing for quite some time now.

Yellow stain remover from teeth

Next time you feel like going to a dentist for teeth whitening, think again! ACV benefits teeth color – removing the yellowish stains, killing bacteria and germs, thus making the teeth white and sparkling.

Hair growth

Gone are the days when you had to splurge dollars on buying expensive shampoos and hair treatment packages. With ACV, you can have a wonderful aid for your hair growth. Apple cide vinegar benefits hair health, making hair shiny and strengthening hair follicles. Apply ACV right after shampooing, and after two minutes, rinse it off to treat yourself with beautiful hair. Boost your hair growth and add volume to your hair with apple cide vinegar.

A research report in pacificcollege.edu suggests diluting 1/3 cup of ACV in 4 cups of water to condition/shampoo once every month.

But I am not sure if it has any graying impact on the hair. Looking for answers here. (http://theory.rutgers.edu/wiki/wikibook/index.php/Benefits_Of_Apple_Cider_Vinegar_For_Hair)

Helps skin problems

As a natural astringent, ACV can be used to treat severe pimple problems and acne breakouts by eliminating toxins and cleansing the skin. ACV restores the pH level in the skin, which helps in treating acne breakouts and adding to your skin luster. What’s more, it can help clean up warts. If you soak a cotton ball in ACV and apply it to the wart before going to bed, you can wake up with amazing results in the morning! I will still refrain from applying it directly on face. Better still to dilute and apply.

Fights allergy

If you are vulnerable to allergy, Apple Cider Vinegar benefits would be immense for you. ACV can help fight allergy, as it breaks up mucus and relieves allergy and chronic sinusitis symptoms. Rich in potassium, ACV can be an effective remedy for runny noses. Drinking two tbsp of ACV mixed with water in the morning will work magic toward healing your allergy problem. ACV encourages healthy gut flora and works similar to probiotics, which are friendly bacteria within the body. It also helps acid reflux problems and offers an excellent natural remedy to heartburn problems.

Being rich in acetic acid, apple cider vinegar, taken before or with meals, might help in improving the body's ability to digest essential minerals in foods.

Reduces blood sugar

AC Vinegar benefits in digestion by inactivating some digestive enzymes that break carbohydrates into sugar. As a result, this slows the absorption of sugar in the bloodstream.

Slowed absorption of sugar allows the insulin-resistant body ample time to source sugar from the blood, preventing any spike in blood sugar levels. According to a 2004 study published in the Diabetes Care, a publication of the American Diabetes Association, ACV remedy for diabetes. It holds great promise for people with diabetes, as it increases insulin sensitivity in insulin-resistant people.

Is Calcium Rich

Vinegar may prove extremely useful to women, who lack adequate calcium in their bodies. Of course you can derive dietary calcium from dairy products, including milk.

However, some women suffer from lactose intolerance, which makes it hard to digest the sugar in milk, thus suffer uncomfortable gastrointestinal symptoms, including diarrhea, cramping, on consumption of dairy products.

ACV comes as a great alternative to dietary calcium, and helps absorption of more valuable calcium.

Lowers High Blood Pressure

ACV is rich in acetic acid, which helps in lowering blood pressure. A 2001 study conducted on lab animals, and published in Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry, found that acetic acid helped lower blood pressure in rats. Thus it is being seen as quite beneficial for humans. Limited research shows ACV benefits for high blood pressure.

A 2007 study published in the Journal of Nutrition stated that ACV consists of an antioxidant quercetin, which could help lower high blood pressure. Over the course of the study, participants that were given ACV dose regularly for a month experienced a reduction in bp readings.

Reduces High Cholesterol

There is too much hue and cry over apple cider vinegar benefits for high cholesterol and heart blockages and other cardiovascular risks. According to a 2006 study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, lab rats fed acetic acid reported significant drop in the levels of total cholesterol and triglyceride. The theory behind it is that ACV comprises a good amount of pectin, which is soluble fiber that binds to cholesterol and then helps in removing it from the body.

Mix apple cide vinegar with garlic, ginger, and lemon juices and honey. Taken daily, one-two tablespoon of this concoction helps in cardiovascular disorders, heart disease, blockages, high blood pressure, weight loss, cancer, asthma, and muscular problems.

Has Cancer-fighting properties
ACV for cancer? Well, i is known to balance pH levels in the body. The alkaline environment in the body is not conducive for the growth of several ailments, such as cancer. On the contrary, if your body has high acid levels, there is a higher risk of infection, which also causes low energy. So, choose apple cider vinegar to balance your pH levels!

  • Use apple cider as a skin toner
  • Use ACV for healthy hair growth and condition your hair
  • Use ACV for allergies and sinus infection
  • Use ACV as a flea repellent
  • Use apple vinegar as an energy booster.
  • Use apple cider to clean your bathroom and windows
  • Use ACV as an energy drink - ever since I started using apple cider, I haven't felt lethargic or fatigued despite working constantly for 15 hours a day!
  • Use apple cider vinegar for muscular problems
  • Use ACV when you feel the first signs of throat infection - my experience says that whenever I feel soreness in my throat, I take 1 tsp of ACV with lukewarm water and 1/2 tsp of honey. My symptoms just go away.

Also, drinking ACV regularly might burn your throat or introduce bacteria in your body. The best way to use it is in the form of concoction blended with honey, which will reduce its soar properties. Also, apple cide vinegar might interact with certain medications, and cause further problems.

While apple cide vinegar benefits are still under scrutiny and more research is under way, it is important to consult your physician and understand your physical health condition before going ahead with this remedy.

Side Effects
ACV must be used with caution by people with low bone density, osteoporosis, or low potassium levels. It may degrade bones for such people. For people with kidney problems, ACV could lower potassium levels further and may not be safe. But for others, it does not have the same side effects. We cannot generalize things for everyone - what works for one may not be as effective for the other. Caution is urged smile emoticon But in my case, ACV has been a wonder remedy.

An update on ACV
Please buy unpasteurized, raw, unfiltered, made from apple must Apple Cider Vinegar, which has mother tincture. American Garden & Heinz are not the best options. I have been using American Garden for over 6 months, though it has benefited me significantly, it still isn't better than those with mother. Always look for ACV with mother (Braggs mentions it has mother). Braggs is an expensive product. So you may look for other brands that are unpasteurized, unfiltered, and all-natural.

Learn About the Perfect Diet for Underactive Thyroid

Looking for the right hypothyroidism diet? Do you think there is anything like the perfect diet for underactive thyroid?

Well, in order to dig deeper into the right diet for hypothyroisim, you have got to understand what an underactive thyroid means for your body's functioning.

Is i t normal to have an underactive thyroid?
Well, as its name suggests, an underactive thyroid means that the butterfly-shaped thyroid gland is not performing to its optimal best. What does this mean for the rest of the body?

You may be surprised to know that the thyroid gland controls a majority of the body's functions. How?

Well, it produces hormones that spread out to different receptors in the body that control the functions of

  • metabolism
  • heart
  • mood
  • temperature

Hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid is a condition in which thyroid gland does not produce the adequate amount of hormone. As a result, the pituitary gland responds by producing more Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) so that more hormone is produced out of the thyroid gland.

TSH causes the thyroid gland to produce triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). These two hormones play a role in the body's metabolism and are required for the normal growth of the brain.

Hypothyroidism Diet: What To Eat for an Underactive Thyroid

Taking a proper diet for underactive thyroid is an important step in the treatment for hypothyroidism, which is the enlargement and malfunctioning of the thyroid gland that secretes hormones to regulate our metabolism.

Individuals suffering from low thyroid levels require a strict diet for underactive thyroid, which would include hormonal supplements.

The thyroid gland is a silent workhorse in your body, which when goes haywire can trigger all sorts of health problems, including

  • sensitivity to cold
  • allergies
  • weight gain
  • heart-related problems
  • sluggishness
  • depression

Hypothryoidism Diet

  • A diet for underactive thyroid must be rich in iodine, proteins, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and cereals, which would help the thyroid function better. A balanced diet with these ingredients acts as a check on the unexpected weight gain and helps in weight loss, and patients suffering from hypothyroidism would need these for proper functioning of the thyroid gland. However, you would do well to regulate your fiber intake, as fiber may affect the absorption of synthetic hormone.

Should you take Fiber or Not with an Underactive Thyroid
So what does this mean? Well, it does not mean you should stop the intake of fiber; rather, your focus should be on changing the time you take fiber. If you take thyroxine medication in the morning, make sure you take it early enough so that the body has enough time to absorb it before you can go for a fiber-rich diet.

  • A protein-rich diet is essential to controlling weight, maintaining hormonal secretion, and managing thyroid level in the body. A perfect diet for underactive thyroid would comprise green leafy vegetables, whole grains, milk, lean meat, egg white, and other fatty acid-rich foods.
  • A balanced diet for underactive thyroid must also include an adequate percentage of vitamins to maintain good hormonal levels. Vitamins can be taken as natural thyroid supplements or through vitamin-rich foods, such as egg yolk, spinach, figs, oranges, papaya, banana, watermelon, and carrots.

What not to eat for hypothyroidism diet

  • There is conflicting evidence that Cruciferous vegetables, including kale, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower , may interfre with the synthesis of thyroid hormone. The idea is not to cut down on their intake if you are on a diet of greens. But you will do well to limit the intake of cruciferous vegetables for hypothyroidism.
  • Thiocyanates are sulfur-containing compounds that obstruct absorption of iodine by the thyroid gland. The reason is that these compounds compete with iodine to enter the gland. These also weaken the activity of thyroid peroxidase enzyme essential for inserting iodine into thyroid hormone.  Sweet potato, cassava or tapioca, corn, bamboo shoots, and flax are some of the foods that contain thiocyanates.
  • Processed, sugar foods
  • Alcohol and hypothyroidism do not go well together.

IMPORTANCE OF IODINE

With low thyroid hormonal levels being primarily the result of iodine deficiency, it is essential to make iodine an essential part of your diet. Though iodine deficiency results in hypothyroidism, iodine overdose is also detrimental to health. Thus only adequate quantity of iodine should be taken for a healthy lifestyle. The best way to ensure adequate intake of iodine is to use iodized salt in your daily diet. You can also complement your diet with cod fish and fish oil.

However, avoid overdose of iodine, iron, sugar, and milk in your diet. Do not make junk food and fast food part of your diet, as any other strict dietary regimen would recommend; same is the case with a perfect diet for underactive thyroid.

Always remember to eat quality food for a healthy thyroid gland as well as for every other organ in the body.

Wishing you health and happiness always :)
