Baking With Millet Flour Recipes [Glossary of Millets in Indian Languages]

Which millet aids in digestion? Are there millets side effects? Does millet cause constipation? Which millet is good for weight loss? How much millet to eat per day? Or you are looking for healthy millet recipes for weight loss? Can we eat millets daily?

Well, I will be elaborate on the use of ancient grains. If you are yet to try out millets, then pick Little millet as your first choice. Go for ragi or finger millet if you are looking for a weight loss diet ingredient that actually works and plays a role in helping you lose weight. To add flavor to your meals, you may try out foxtail millet or kangu. This has become a hot favorite with me.

Is amaranth a millet?

Which is your favorite millet?

I started my journey with little millet, when I was unaware of millets. It all began with an experiment with little millet or vrat ke chawal (hindi).

Thereafter I picked ragi or finger millet and loved its earthy nutty flavor upon roasting. I have been crazy for ragi , especially sprouting it and then dry roasting it until it is perfect for munching. It's my favorite snack. Oh yes!!

I love to use ragi in dosa, idli, cookies, laddus, cakes, and crackers.

Then I found foxtail millet and there has been no looking back. It is the tastiest and most flavorful of all millets. It is easy to cook, adds flavor and nutrition to your diet, and keeps you feeling full and satiated. I love to make finger millet upma. But more than that, I love finger millet salad.

I also love to add finger millet to cookies and laddus.

I have experimented with kodo millet too. However, it sits last on the list of my favorite millets. I need to experiment further to judge it.

WHich millet you should start your kids with?

Of all the millets, little millet is the easiest to absorb and digest by the little one's tummy so you can start your kid on a millet diet with little millet porridge. Make your own little millet flour at home by following the video shared below and then making porridge with it. Soak the little millet flour in water for 30 minutes and then cook it into porridge. You may add a hint of black pepper and salt.

You can mix millets with proteins from lentils or legumes to cater to your baby's protein needs. Millets+ lentils + veggies make a complete meal for kids. You may add a dash of ground nut oil for kids. Avoid giving them sweets until at least 1year of age. Because once kids start eating sweets, they develop a love for all things sweet and start disliking everything savory and salty. This goes against a wholesome balanced dietary plan.

After little millet, you may start with barnyard millet, finger millet, kodo millet, foxtail millet, and other millets. Start with one millet at a time. When you introduce millets to your kids, give their bodies at least a month's time to adapt to millets and benefit from their nutritional profile. After that, you can introduce another millet and wait for a week before starting the other variety of millets. This way you can ensure that their bodies happily adapt to these ancient grains.

Can we use the soaked water for millets? Does millet need to be soaked?

Do millets contain anti-nutrients? Yes, they do. In fact, all whole grains, including oats, contain phytates, which bind to minerals and make their absorption difficult for the body.  Soaking is the first step toward reducing anti-nutrients from millets. Soak for at least 6-8 hours to make digestion easier. Discard the soaked water and then proceed to the next step of cooking. Perhaps we are not used to thinking on these lines until it happens incidentally and you want to share your experiment with others. I am happy to say that I have experimented with making curd without starter and it gives me creamy and sweet curd. बिना जामन के दही | How to Make Curd at Home Without Curd A Little About my Curd Love Give me a bowl of rich, creamy curd and I do not need anything else on my dining table. Perhaps as a Punjabi, born and brought up into a Punjabi family, I have that special love and fondness for curd. My parents have inculcated in me good eating habits - home food is the best, they would day, preach and practice. This has become ingrained in my thoughts. I detest outside food, and yes, I dub it as market junk. One reason I love all homemade stuff - mommade food is the best. But w
