Barley Chapati: A Healthy Summer Staple

Barley, a nutrient-rich whole grain, offers a delightful and healthful alternative to traditional wheat flour chapatis. This recipe presents a simple method for incorporating barley into your summer diet, creating soft and fluffy flatbreads.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup barley flour
  • ¼ cup + 1 tablespoon water

Instructions:

  1. In a saucepan, bring the water to a boil.
  2. Gradually stir in the barley flour until well combined.
  3. Cover the mixture and set aside for 10 minutes to allow hydration.
  4. Knead the dough with moistened hands until smooth and elastic, resembling a perfect chapati dough consistency.
  5. Allow the dough to rest for 30 minutes.
  6. Divide the dough into small balls and roll them out into thin circles using a rolling pin, lightly dusted with flour to prevent sticking.
  7. For a perfectly round shape, utilize a suitable utensil as a guide.
  8. Heat a skillet over low heat and place a rolled-out chapati on the surface.
  9. After 30 seconds, flip the chapati and increase the heat to medium-high.
  10. Flip the chapati once more and apply pressure with a roti press or cloth to encourage puffing.
  11. For added moisture and flavor, spread a thin layer of ghee over the cooked chapati.
  12. Store the chapatis in a casserole dish to retain softness.
