Karela Chips Baked Recipe in Air Fryer [Indian Healthy Snack Recipe]

She asked, "Can I bake bitter gourd chips?" My answer was simple, "yes, why not?" Immediately, she replied, "then share the recipe of baked karela chips and pakodas." So friends, here is my experiment with baked karela chips recipe. The easy bitter gourd recipe gives you tangy karela chips and pakoda that you can savor with your tea or relish as an accompaniment to rice. I love these healthy baked pakodas both ways. If you are not too much of a pakoda lover, then try baking these longer to relish them as karela crackers and enjoy later.

Do you have to peel karela?

No, I do not peel bitter gourd. The peel has a lot of nutritional value too. But if you want, you may peel the skin and bake the rest of the karela.

 Is karela good for health?

Karela is an absolutely healthy ingredient. Also known as bitter melon, karela has a high nutritional value. It is traditionally known for its medicinal properties, which make it a perfect addition to your anti-inflammatiory, antidiabetic, anticancer, antiviral diet. Not only this, bitter gourd has cholesterol-lowering properties.

Bitter melon is also known to have phenolic compounds that make it a potent antioxidant and antimutagen. The best thing about bitter gourd is that the leaves, stems, fruit, and seeds all are edible and have medicinal properties.

How do you make sun dry bitter gourd?

I will post a recipe on this soon.

Karela Chips Baked Recipe

8-9 karela (bitter gourd)

1/2-1 tsp salt)

1/2 tsp- turmeric (haldi)

3 tbsp- besan (chickpea flour)

1/4 tsp- amchur powder (mango powder)

1/4 tsp- onion powder

1/4 tsp- garlic powder

or if you do not want to use onion and garlic powders, use coriander powder instead.

1/4 tsp- garam masala

1 tbsp- oil

How To Bake Karela chips/crackers

Rinse karela well and thinly slice each gourd. I kept these thicker so my bitter melon took a lot of time to bake fully. Please keep thin slices. You may even make roundels.

Marinate with turmeric and salt. Coat well.

Leave aside for 1 hour at least. You may keep longer too.

Squeeze the karela after marination. The idea is to reduce bitterness of karela.

Let's make powder with besan, onion powder, garlic powder, amchur powder, turmeric, salt, garam masala, salt, haldi.

Rub karela slices into this powder.

Add oil and coat evenly. Leave for 30 minutes or more in the fridge.

Preheat oven, airfryer, conveciton, otg to 140 degrees celsius for 10 minutes.

Bake in airfryer for 140 degrees c for 30-35 minutes. Your airfried karela pakodas are ready. If you want to make baked karela chips, bake longer for 20-30 minutes.
