Green Tea Benefits: A Health Wonder

green tea benefits
All tea lovers, here is some good news for you! Your favorite drink can help you boost health. Studies have found that green tea helps reduce several types of cancer and lower heart disease risk. A native of China, green tea benefits are aplenty, helping promote good health. Unlike coffee, green tea offers lesser doses of caffeine and is thus a more beneficial alternative to the former.Green tea belongs to the Camellia Sinensis plant genus, very much like oolong tea and black tea.

The Green Tea- Antioxidant Connection
Green tea is widely popular for its antioxidants, found in a group of polyphenols known as ‘catechins’ - which are seen as beneficial in preventing cellular damage that results in cancer. Green tea is enriched with catechins due to its processing. The processing involves heating the leaves for a brief period before drying them, which clears the enzymes that are otherwise responsible for breaking down of the catechins, thus protecting its potent antioxidant property.

Reduces Cancer Risk
health benefits of green tea
Thanks to its polyphenpols, green tea benefits are galore, helping prevent bladder cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer, colorectal cancer, esophageal cancer, breast cancer patients. A few clinical studies claim that polyphenols in green tea help kill cancerous cells, thus preventing the risk of cancer. Clinical studies on animals confirm that green tea inhibits growth of breast cancer cells due to polyphenols. Many studies claim that women drinking green tea regularly are at a lesser risk of breast cancer. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is the main polyphenol in green tea, which, according to studies, has anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties. As a result, green tea is being seen as a potent weapon to prevent development and growth of skin tumors and cancerous cells.

Lowers Chances of Liver Disease
If you drink green tea daily, you are less likely to develop liver problems, according to clinical studies. Animal studies show that green tea lowers risk of liver tumors in mice. One of the key health benefits of green tea is that it helps protect liver from the harmful effects of toxic substances, including alcohol.

Reduces Risk of Heart Disease
Additional green tea health benefits include a lower risk for heart disease, thanks to its antioxidant properties. The antioxidants help increase good cholesterol (HDL), block oxidation of LDL or bad cholesterol, and improve artery function while reducing hypertension risk, thus improving heart health. According to a Chinese study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, regular consumers of green tea are at a reduced risk of hypertension than those who do not drink tea regularly.

Improves Weight loss
Research links green tea extract to weight loss. Green tea is extremely beneficial for overweight or obese people as it boosts metabolism and helps burn fat. This wonder herb delivers hydration to the body, helping it to perform at optimal levels, boosting your energy levels.

Other Green Tea Benefits

  • The herb has diuretic properties and promotes urination.
  • In China, green tea is used as a tonic for weak hearts.
  • Since it contains caffeine, green tea is taken as a mild stimulant to deal with fatigue.
  • One study claims that green tea helps prevent dental cavities, though more research is under way in this regard.
  • Green tea may help patients suffering from inflammatory diseases, including arthritis, due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Research suggests that this herb may help reduce inflammation and slow down the breakdown of cartilage.
  • Green tea extract may help prevent cold and flu symptoms and treat genital warts.

Precautions

  • Green tea should not be consumed in large quantities before bed time, especially if you are troubled with sleeping problems.
  • It may cause nervousness,  insomnia, among other symptoms of excess caffeine intake.
  • As a major source of oxalate, excess intake of green tea may cause kidney stones.
  • Pregnant and lactating women should avoid green tea,
  • If you are suffering from diabetes, anemia, osteoporosis, or glaucoma, it is best to consult with your health care provider before consuming green tea.

Sachin Tendulkar Retires With A Heavy Heart; Conferred With BharatRatna

His life has been all about the 22 yards ."I knew never ever in my life I would get to do that again. And that is where my life started and those 22 yards gave me everything. It's like a temple for me. I wanted to say thank you to cricket. I just thanked cricket for everything that I got in my life," were Sachin Tendulkar's words after he made a decision to quit the game after 24 years when he smashed records and made new ones. His glorious cricket career is history now, and other cricket players have too many records to chase! Will they ever be able to break Sachin's records? I doubt!

Cricketing world will always remember the era of Tendulkar that began on November 15, 1989 and came to a halt on November 16, 2013.

The day has finally arrived when Sachin bids adieu to international cricket. Sachin's farewell match, as expected, saw Sachin and crores of his fans in an emotional state. Dedicating his success to his coach Ramakant Archrekar, father Ramesh, brother Ajit, mother Rajni, and wife Anjali, Sachin became very emotional. The cricketing world saw Sachin exit from the ground wiping his tears.

After the match, PMO announced that Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar will be conferred with Bharat Ratna - the most prestigious award for an Indian. In his port-retirement press conference, Sachin said: "It hasn't struck me that I won't play cricket again. It has been a dream journey, no regret that I am leaving cricket. This was the right time to stop playing cricket. It was an enjoyable journey. I was still enjoying cricket. I have always said the day I felt I should stop playing, I would inform you. I got that feeling, because after 24 years, you have to appreciate I had many injuries, not easy to overcome. You reach a stage when your body gives you a message, enough of this physical load. The body requires rest. The body is not able to take more load consistently. It was becoming an effort to continue training. Earlier, it used to be automatic."

Dedicating Bharat Ratna to all mothers who make all kinds of sacrifices for their children, Sachin added: "I would like to share this award with all the mothers for all the sacrifices they make to raise their children."

About his retirement decision, Sachin said, "I had a question and when I looked for an answer, I felt it was the perfect time to leave the game." Sachin has indicated that cricket is oxygen for him and thus he would remain associated with the game."Cricket has been my life, it is oxygen to me. In 40 years, at least 30 years I have played proper cricket. 75 per cent of my life has been cricket, so there will be some association with the game, maybe not in the immediate future. Still, it is only 24 hours since my retirement, give me at least 24 days to relax. Then I will see what to do," added Sachin.

"When we won the World Cup two years ago. I had to wait 22 years for it that has to be a special moment. Yesterday, the way people responded, I don't know how to react to that, I want to say a big 'thank you' to everyone, so that was also special," Sachin said.

Sachin's retirement has left the country bereft of a legend who has dedicated 24 years to cricket. Sachin has lived cricket. According to his wife, cricket is oxygen for Tendulkar. The God of Cricket scored 74 runs in the first innings against West Indies in Mumbai and won his country the game.In the reception ceremony, an emotional Tendulkar said,

sachin's mother rajni tendulkar
"It's hard to believe that wonderful journey is coming to end. It's getting a little difficult to talk but I'll manage. The most important person in my life, and I've missed him a lot since he passed away in 1999, is my father, without his guidance I don't think I'd be standing in front of you."

Tendulkar played his first match against Pakistan in November 1989 as a 16-year-old curly haired boy. In his very first match, he entered the cricket scene as a teenager and was hit on the nose by a Younis thunderbolt. It was then that it seemed his career would come to an end. At that time, his batting partner Navjot Sidhu was worried about him and was rushing to his aid, but the 16-year-old boy with blood dripping from his nose, said "Mein Khelega [I will play]". So this announced his arrival to the cricketing scene, where he would write history and make every record in the game.

Tendulkar became a name to be reckoned with in the game of cricket. In fact, his name became synonymous with cricket. There is no batsman who can match up the talent and skills of Tendulkar. To me, as one of his biggest fans, cricket means Tendulkar and Tendulkar means cricket.

His words make me more emotional: "The first moment when I went on the wicket and stood between the 22 yards, I realized this was the last time I was in front of a packed stadium as part of the Indian team. That made me quite emotional, that I wouldn't have a bat in my hand, playing for India. While I walked back to the dressing room, I didn't look up when shaking hands with many of the West Indies team members, because I was in tears. It was an emotional moment, I remember when I was thinking about retirement I don't think I was very emotional because I knew it was the right decision even though my family was. I became emotional with the way players gave me a send off, when I was talking to the wicket. Normally I am not very emotional because I knew it was the right decision. The thought that I won't be able to represent India again made me emotional," says Sachin.

Sachin-Anjali

sachin anjali enter wedlock
Anjali and Tendulakr's love story is all about love at first sight. Anjali, who is older to Sachin by 5 years, was a pediatrics by profession, but she left her career to support her husband's career. When Anjali met Sachin, she knew nuts about the game and brushed up her knowledge of cricket to create an impression on Sachin when the two began dating each other. “I think what he liked about me was that I knew nothing about  cricket when I first met him. I didn’t even know who Sachin was,” says Anjali Tendulkar, who is the daughter of industrialist Ashok Mehta with her mother being an Anglo Indian.

Both got married on May 25, 1995 and were blessed with two kids- Sara Tendulkar and Arjun Tendulkar.  Soon she left her profession to start a married life. “I could not be married to Sachin and also have a full-time career. It wasn’t possible because he depends on me for almost everything. It was my decision. With Sachin not around and me with two kids at home, it wouldn’t have been possible. I took a decision and I have never, ever regretted it,” adds Anjali.

sachin anjali on their wedding day
In Anjali's words, "I can imagine cricket without Sachin but I cannot imagine Sachin without cricket...Sachin is never completely switched off from cricket. Even when we are on a vacation, at the back of his mind will be what he should eat and what not, with a series or a tour coming up." To Sachin, cricket comes first and then family, in Anjali's words.

Along with his millions of fans, I have been in an extremely emotional state. It's hard to believe cricket without Tendulkar.

Here's just a brief about Sachin's exploits at the game:
sachin's farewell test
Sachin finally ends his glorious cricket career with a total of 34,357 runs in international cricket and 15,921 runs in Tests. He is the only cricketer in the world to have scored 100 hundreds in international cricket.  I am sure Sachin's records can never be broken. There can't be another Sachin.

Honors for Sachin after his farewell match at Wankhede, with his fans chanting, Saacchhiin Sachin:

  • Tribute from the Sri Lanka government
  • Tribute from the host broadcasters
  • Tribute from Mumbai police
A star batsman, a dedicated fielder, and all-round player, Sachin Tendulkar in his final message at Wankhede dedicated his life and career to all those people who have stood firm behind him during all times. "Even though physically I am not playing for India, in my heart I will always play and pray for India. Whether I am part of the team, it really doesn't matter," he said.

On his father, Ramesh Tendulkar, who was a teacher and writer, Sachin Tendulkar said:

sachin during final match
"The most important person in my life and I have missed him a lot since 1999. Without his guidance, I wont have been standing here before you. He gave me freedom since 11. He told me to be a nice human being. Every time I have done something special, I have raised my bat for my father."

Thanking his mother for being support and sacrifices all these years, Sachin said:

"I don’t know how she dealt with such a naughty child like me. She must be patient. My mother took care of me. She started praying for me before I started playing cricket and she kept praying, praying and praying. A big thanks to her for all the sacrifices."

Ajit Tendulkar, his elder brother, has played a phenomenal role in Sachin's life and cricketing career. In fact, it was Ajit who introduced his youngest brother to the game of cricket. On Ajit, Tendulkar said, "I don't know what to talk about Ajit. We have lived this dream together. He sacrificed his career, he spotted the spark and took me to Achrekar sir and my life changed. He called me last night and we were discussing my dismissal. That's the rapport we have developed since my birth. We agreed on various things as for my techniques and many times I didn't agree with his view. Now I think I would have been a lesser cricketer had I not had him."

About his eldest brother Nitin Tendulakr, Sachin added, "Nitin and his family have always supported me. He said whatever you do, I know you will give a 100 per cent."

Sachin has an elder sister Savita Tendulkar, who lives in Pune. "My first cricket bat - a Kashmir willow - was presented by my sister. She is the one who continues to fast when I bat. So thank you Savita."

The most beautiful part of Sachin's life has been his wife Anjali, who has stood like a rock behind him, giving him the much-needed support during hardest of times. Thanking Anjali for being the most important part of his life, the Indian legendary cricketer said,

west indies team giving guard of honor to sachin
"Most beautiful thing happened to me in 1990 when I met my wife Anjali. Those were the most wonderful years. Being a doctor, there was a wonderful career ahead of her. She told me when we wanted to have a family that I should concentrate on cricket and she will take care of everything. Thanks for being there. You are the best partnership I have had in my life."

Sachin's two children were born at a time when he was at the peak of his cricketing career, so hardly did he find time to spend with Sara and Arjun. He says his children are his stars, his most prized possessions. On his children, Sachin said, "I wanted to spend so much time with Sara and Arjun on their birthdays, annual days, sports days. I missed out on all of these. Thanks for understanding. For 14 and 16 years, I did not spend enough time. I promise you  I will make it up."

Sachin had some special words for his first coach Ramakant Archrekar. Paying a tribute to him, Sachin said,

"My cricket career started when I was 11. The turning point of my career was when my brother (Ajit) took me to Achrekar sir. I was extremely delighted to see him up in the stands. Normally he sits in front of the television and he watches all the games that I play. When I was 11/12, those were the days when I used to hop back on his scooter and play a couple of practice matches a day. The first half the innings I would be batting at Shivaji Park, the second half, at some other match in Azad Maidan. He would take me all over Mumbai to make sure I got match practice. On a lighter note, in the last 29 years, sir has never ever said 'well played' to me because he thought I would get complacent and I would stop working hard. Maybe he can push his luck and wish me now, well done on my career, because there are no more matches, sir, in my life. I will be witnessing cricket, and cricket will always stay in my heart, but you have had an immense contribution in my life, so thank you very much."

Sachin spent most of his cricketing career with Saurav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, and VVS Laxman. On his colleagues and other players in the Indian team, Sachin Tendulkar added:

indian cricket team honoring sachin tendulkar after his final test
"We see them on the giant screen – Sourav, VVS, Kumble who isn't here and my team members. I have had wonderful years with you. It is going to be hard not to be with you and share the dressing room. I know you will continue to serve the nation in the right spirit and right values. I believe we were the lucky ones to have been chosen by the almighty. I have full faith in you that you will serve the nation and bring all the laurels to the country. All the best."

He had a word for his doctors, physios, and everybody else who helped him stay fit. Thanking them, Sachin Ramesh tendulkar said, " Would like to thank all the doctors, physios to get this body together Without your special efforts, it won’t have been possible. I have called them at weird hours, they have taken flights at odd hours to help me stay fit."

Finally, on his fans, who have always backed him during his hardest times, Sachin added "I want to thank all the people here and from various parts of the world. You have meant a lot to me."

On his childhood friends, Sachin said,  "My childhood friends have had a terrific contribution. They left all their work aside when I asked them to bowl at the nets, join me on holidays, help me concentrate. Friends woke up at 3am when I was injured and reassured me that my career was not over. Life would have been incomplete without them."

sachin being honored by bcci
Ending his farewell speech, Sachin said, I know I have met so many guys who have fasted for me, prayed for me, done so much for me. Without that life wouldn't have been like this for me. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, and also say that time has flown by rather quickly, but the memories you have left with me will always be with me forever and ever, especially "Sachin, Sachin" which will reverberate in my ears till I stop breathing. Thank you very much. If I have missed out on saying something, I hope you understand. Goodbye."

After Sachin's Retirement
I started watching cricket when Sachin had begun to carve out a niche for himself in the cricket world. It's difficult to imagine that I will ever watch cricket again now that I can't see Sachin with his willow. To me, he has been more than the best cricketer in the world. He has been my ideal, my inspiration, who has been instrumental in many transformations in my life. I cannot count all my blessings that I credit to Sachin here, but he has been my biggest inspiration all these years. I wish Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar all the best for his future!

Sachin Bharat Ratna
On February 4, 2014, Sachin received Bharat Ratna with full honors - becoming the first sportsperson and youngest recipient to be conferred with the prestigious award. After receiving the award in a glittering ceremony in the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Sachin says he is honored to have been bestowed with the highest civilian award, dedicating the award to "all mothers of India." Sachin joins the list of 42 other eminent personalities that have received the award ( scientist CN Rao received the honor along with Sachin).

#I Am Malala- Chapter 1: The Birth of Malala

malala's father holding his daughter
Continued from I Am Malala

This chapter talks through the birth of a girl child in the house of Ziauddin Yousufzai of Swat. A girl was born in a village where celebrations mark the birth of a male child, while daughters are merely meant to remain hidden behind curtain. The only thing expected of girls in the village is to serve the family with food and bear children. But this girl was different. How? Let's see.

The birth of Malala makes the atmosphere somewhat tense, but the girl's father is ecstatic. He thanks Allah for gifting him the biggest gift of his life.

Malala's father fell in love with his daughter at first sight and did not remorse even for a moment the birth of a girl child. Telling his cousin about his emotional bonding with his infant daughter and inviting friends and relatives to celebrate the birth of his daughter, Ziauddin said that there was something different about his child. He named the girl Malala after the Malalai of Maiwand - the most popular name among the women of Afghanistan. Malala grew up hearing valorous acts of Malalai, who valiantly fought against the British occupation of Afghanistan and sacrificed her life for the country, motivating an entry Afghan army to take up cudgels against the occupation forces. To Pashtun kids, Malalai resembles Joan of Arc.

young malala and khushal
"We lived in the most beautiful place in the world," says Malala about the Swat Valley, which she describes as "paradise" on earth. Once a princely state, Swat is now part of the KPK or Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In her description of Swat, Malala says,

"From the rooftop I watched the mountains change with the seasons. In the autumn chill winds would come. In the winter everything was white snow, long icicles hanging from the roof like daggers, which we loved to snap off. We raced around, building snowmen and snow bears and trying to catch snowflakes. Spring was when Swat was at its greenest. Eucalyptus blossom blew into the house,
coating everything white, and the wind carried the pungent smell of the rice fields. I was born in
summer, which was perhaps why it was my favorite time of year, even though in Mingora summer
was hot and dry and the stream stank where people dumped their garbage."

malala's childhood home
Two years after her birth, her younger brother Kushal was born and five years later, the youngest of the three, Atal, completed the family. Despite her two brothers, Malala remained the apple of her father's eye. Malala grew up listening to the stories of warring tribes from her father, who had a commanding personality.

Since childhood, Malala was raised in an environment where male gender dominated the household and girls remained behind the veil. Malala had seen her mother follow the family traditions holistically. Her mother always remained within the confines of her home and never stepped out. But Malala wanted all this to change. And the fire for change was simmering in her mind.

"I had decided very early I would not be like that. My father always said, ‘Malala will be free as a
bird.’ I dreamed of going to the top of Mount Elum like Alexander the Great to touch Jupiter and even
beyond the valley. But, as I watched my brothers running across the roof, flying their kites and
skilfully flicking the strings back and forth to cut each other’s down, I wondered how free a daughter
could ever be," adds Malala.

Malala To Be Conferred With Nobel Peace Prize: The Story of Malala

malala for nobel

She envisioned the dream of women liberation in the streets of Swat (Pakistan) when she was shot, but now her dream has transformed into a more zealous fight for the rights of women. After she was successful in defeating death, she has emerged stronger and decided to challenge the Taliban more vociferously. Strong, courageous, and bold, Malala Yousufzai has become a sworn enemy for the Taliban and the torchbearer of women rights in Islam.

Malala has been nominated for 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for her active role against Taliban. The Pakistani child rights activist has become the youngest ever recipient of the prize. The Nobel committee has lauded her "struggle against the suppression of children and young people."

Paying tribute to Malala, Thorbjorn Jagland, Norwegian Nobel Committee chairman, says "Despite her youth, Malala Yousafzai, has already fought for several years for the right of girls to education and has shown by example that children and young people too can contribute to improving their own situations."

"This she has done under the most dangerous circumstances. Through her heroic struggle she has become a leading spokesperson for girls' rights to education."

Nobel committee acknowledged the role of a Muslim girl, that too a Pakistani, for joining in a common struggle for children's education and against extremism.

The Story of Malala: Chapter 1

malala nobel prize winner after the taliban attack
Malala - the name itself inspires attention and evokes action. I am Malala is the real life story of a 16-year-old Pakistani girl, who raised her voice against one of the most violent of human races - the terrorist group of Taliban. Malala was shot for standing up against the Taliban rule that advocated banishment from school for girls. This 16-year-old girl, who loved going to school and wanted to study to do something big in life, opened her voice against the Taliban diktat, asking girls not to fear the terrorist group that wanted to see all girls within the corridors of their homes.

But the Taliban did not sit silently and conspired against this little girl, who has now become a heroine of sort for all Muslim girls in Pakistan. The Taliban plotted to kill her and shot her in October 2012 when she was returning from school in a school bus. The attacker fired three shots, says Malala - while one hit her in the left eye socket, the two others mistakenly hit two other girls. Malala was rushed to a Paksitani hospital and soon after was shifted to Britain, especially after voices to save her life were heard from all corners of the globe. Today, this girl is alive, with God's grace. Undithered by the Taliban, this little Paksitani girl has sworn to continue fighting for the rights of women.

I am Malala
I am Malala is her story - right from her birth until her last day in her home country. Malala has become the voice of Muslims and the face of women rights in Islamic countries - the voice of moderate Muslims who respect their women and see them on a par with men. The Pakistani girl credits her upbringing for her braveheart nature and passion to resist atrocious rule of the Taliban. The charismatic teenager gives due credit to her father, who has remained an active voice against the Taliban's narrow-mindedness. He is an outspoken activist, who is fighting for the rights of women and believes girls have equal rights as men when it comes to education. Presently, he is in Britain with his courageous daughter, who is still receiving treatment after being shot by terrorists last October. Malala has also joined a school there.

In a speech to the UN, she challenges the Taliban, saying, "They think that God is a tiny, little conservative being who would send girls to the hell just because of going to school. The terrorists are misusing the name of Islam and Pashtun society for their own personal benefits. Islam says that it is not only each child's right to get education, rather it is their duty and responsibility."

The Taliban attack has only brought more fame and recognition for Malala on the global level. Now the 16-year-old girl from Pakistan's Swat has hundreds of thousands of followers from all over the world, who are reiterating Malala's message of equality, equal opportunity, and moderate Islam.

After her address to the UN General Assembly, Malala was awarded the Children's Peace Prize. She has also received the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought from the European Parliament and was nominated for the most prestigious Nobel peace Prize. The Malala Fund, her foundation works to make girl education in developing countries a priority. Her book, "I Am Malala," is a frank and straightforward account of her real life happenings and the problems faced by Pakistan when it comes to fighting against the radical brand of Islam.

Unlike the Taliban thinking, Malala's ideology is to fight for girls' rights and create a society where there is equality.

Health Benefits of Cloves

clove benefits
clove benefits
Benefits of cloves have been known for ages. Most of us know clove for its aromatic properties, but do you know this dried flower bud of clove tree works magic on health? Yes, research proves that clove is a beneficial herb that can help fight you several health problems. Grown in tropical climates of India and Sri Lanka, clove belongs to the dry-warm group to which belongs another medicinal and aromatic herb - cinnamon (I will write about cinnamon soon).  Personally, we use clove in tea. In my family, it is primarily known for its benefits in fighting cold.

The most popular use of clove is in cuisines world over as a spice and a lesser common use is as food preservative. Rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, clove is a great natural product for health.

Great for teeth
One of the most common benefits of clove is for toothache. As clove works as an antiseptic, clove oil may be applied to the gum to relieve tooth ache. You may even apply the whole clove on the aching side between the teeth if you do not have the oil. Another use of clove is as a mouthwash. It is regarded as safe and effective mouth wash for bad breath. Besides, it is used for pain control during dental work. This means the next time you visit a dentist for a tooth problem, take cloves with you - may be you will not have to bear the pain associated with the tooth procedure.

Works Magic for Skin
Regular application of clove mixture on face keeps it from acne, blemishes or scars, thanks to its anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antibacterial, analgesic properties. Clove oil comprises eugenol, a substance having antibacterial properties. However, avoid undiluted use of clove oil, as it has burning properties. When mixed with a skin friendly carrier oil, such as grapeseed oil, clove oil can help cure emerging or existing breakouts. Clove oil can also help improve complexion when 1 tbs of clove oil is blended with 1 teaspoon of honey. Mix the solution with 3 drops of fresh lemon juice and apply on your face for a better glowing complexion.

Fights Allergy
One of the lesser known clove benefits is its use in relieving running nose or allergy symptoms, especially if you are a victim of exposure to cold. If yours is just a mild common cold problem, just smelling the clove will help. However, some studies claim that clove oil could cause an allergic skin reaction, such as burning sensation, lower blood sugar levels and higher risk of bleeding. Studies are also under way to establish the use of clove as a bactericide or fungicide in post-harvest applications.

Ear aches
One of the unknown benefits of clove oil is that it can alleviate ear ache and reduce infection. Method to use: dilute clove oil in carrier oil. Make sure you do not use water. Place the solution on a cotton ball and use it inside the ear canal. The pain will subside within a few minutes. Due to its antifungal, antibacterial, antiseptic, antiviral properties, clove oil is a great remedy for aches and pains.

Helps Digestion
For people experiencing frequent digestion problems, clove is a magic herb. It stimulates digestive system and can help stomach ulcers. However, if the problem is associated with hemorrhoids or constipation, clove might not be the right solution. Mixing clove oil with an edible apple puree can help fight food poisoning. Research  claims clove oil helps suppress growth of listeria that may be linked to food-borne illness.

Fights cancer
Clove oil uses are still being explored. However, clove oil holds promise as a cancer fighting agent.Research is still under way in this regard. So it should be used under the guidance of a medical practitioner.

Clove or clove oil is undoubtedly a great herb for health. But too much use of clove may not be good for health. Though clove benefits health, it is better to seek guidance of a doctor before starting a therapy on your own.

Water Benefits for Health

benefits of water
water benefits
Water benefits health immensely. No matter how much water you drink everyday, this write-up promises to motivate you to drink plenty more for good health. Here I must emphasize that I am talking about normal drinking water or calorie free beverages, and not coffee, tea, alcohol, juice, or even cold water. Water forms a major part of your body, or if you say that 60% of your body is water won't be wrong. So the question arises: how much water should you drink?

Do not forget to check the dangers of drinking cold water here.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture’s Choose MyPlate, your thirst should decide your intake of water! Though water is a crucial nutrient, everyone’s needs are different, depending on various factors, including age, level of physical activity, and diet. Most of us get enough water from the foods and beverages we consume during the day. MSU Extension recommends an increased intake of water if you are an older adult or physically active or work in a hot environment to prevent dehydration. Even mild dehydration risks causing ill health and can drain you of energy.

There are plenty of reasons to drink more water, some of which include:

  • Helps Weight loss – Since water has zero calories, it should be your weight loss friend and consumed in significant proportion. Research indicates that drinking water 20-30 minutes before meal makes us feel full. This means less cravings for other tings, which will help reduce the amount of calories you normally consume. If you are struggling with obesity, water can prove to be a miracle for you. Increase your intake of water per day. A normal human must drink at least three liters or 8 glasses of water every day. If you are overweight, your body's need for water would be more. Drinking water can be a crucial component of your weight loss or management plan, as it kick starts your body's metabolism, especially if you start your day drinking a glass of water.Several studies have been conducted to establish the link between water and weight loss, claiming that drinking water is a less risky way to lose weight than many other weight loss programs. It won't be wrong to infer that water benefits weight loss.

  • Improves skin – When absorbed by cells, water helps improve the elasticity and moisture of skin. Our cells are made up of water, and deficit of which can cause wrinkles and fine lines. Lack of sufficient water will cause the skin to lose elasticity and dry out in the form of wrinkles. However, there's a lack of research that could prove a direct connection between water and skin health. Nevertheless, I drink plenty of water everyday and can clearly see water benefits skin health.
  • Improves mood: Anger, confusion, irritation, and depression are often associated with dehydration. So why keep your mood down by being dehydrated. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and happy!
  • Improves brain –  Since 80% of the brain is water, it’s important to keep the body hydrated. Water improves mind and mental power. If you are struggling with ideas, drink a glass of water, says one study conducted by University of East London researchers. Lack of water may affect your focus and memory ability. If you are thirsty, your mind does not work as fast as it does when it is hydrated. According to the study, when you are thirsty and drink a glass of water, the parts of the brain that were telling your body it is thirsty are freed up, so you can expect to come up with some ideas. Separate research claims that your gray matter can shrink if you fail to drink enough water, making it harder to think.

  • Fuels muscles – If you are suffering from muscle aches, joint pain, or persistent headaches, increasing your intake of water can certainly help. Yes, water benefits muscles and joints. As the most essential nutrient, water keeps our bodies hydrated and running smoothly, cushions joints, regulates internal temperature, protects organs and helps carry nutrients to different parts of the body. When your body is dehydrated, muscle strength and control become weak. Due to dehydration, muscles are deprived of electrolytes. As nerves control muscles, the exchange of electrolyte minerals in water results in contraction of muscles and electrical stimulation of nerves. It's thus crucial to drink plenty of water for health and muscle building.
  • Fights sickness: Drink plenty of water to lessen congestion and keep your bodies in better condition. This will help in the prevention of seasonal colds and flu.

  • Reduces cancer risk – Researchers at Harvard and Ohio universities claim that drinking water help keep cells healthy and may also reduce risk of bladder cancer in men and breast cancer in women.
  • Fight diabetes: If you are suffering from diabetes, increasing your water intake can definitely help improve your health. In the case of diabetics, since a large volume of water is diluted in the form of urine, drinking plenty of water will keep the body hydrated. Researchers claim that water benefits the body by helping it regulate blood sugar. Since pure water contains no sugar, it is a healthy solution to reduce intake of sugar in diet.   In diabetics, one of the key signs to know if the glucose levels are high is thirst, and drinking adequate water is the best way to break down the sugar in the body and keep the body functioning normally.
All in all, life on earth won't be possible if there were no water on the planet. Such are water benefits for us that we can't live without it. Water prevents kidney damage and helps them function better. Without adequate water, kidneys fail to function properly.

Aloe Vera Benefits

aloe benefits
Aloe vera benefits health in numerous ways. Let's see how?

An incredibly beneficial plant, aloe vera has plenty of benefits for all of us to enjoy. Whether you seek long, beautiful hair or glowing skin, aloe vera has it all to help you realize your health goals. A part of the lily family, aloe vera belongs to the family of garlic and onion and offers innumerable benefits.

Also known as the plant of immortality, aloe Vera plant is enriched with over 200 active components, which include enzymes, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, amino acids, polysaccharide, and is thus used for a range of remedies. Since it is rich in vitamins and minerals, this miraculous plant offers all the benefits that you would expect from these minerals. Interestingly, aloe is one of the few plants that contains B12 vitamin.

Improves Digestion
Aloe vera is rich in nutrient compounds that help in healing, hydrating, and replenishing the skin when used externally. When consumed as a drink, aloe may have similar benefits on the digestive tract lining. According to a study published in the British Journal of General Practice, aloe vera reduces irritation on the digestive tract lining and boosts healing and repair of ulcers in the intestines and stomach. Its juice helps reduce inflammation in the irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory disorders of the gut. The miraculous plant is also linked to promoting growth of healthy bacteria in the intestines, which help in digestion.

Works Miraculously for the Skin
aloe vera gel
Belonging to the lilaceous family, aloe grows in dry climates of India and Africa. The leaves of the plant secrete a gel that can be applied topically to soothe skin and also heal wounds.  Research claims that aloe helps improve a number of skin conditions, such as flaky or dry skin, scalp problems, hair growth issue, cosmetic ailments, among others.

Aloe vera benefits are aplenty for skin. The plant helps treat

  • wounds and burns
  • cysts
  • minor skin infections
  • elevated blood lipids
Research is under way to explore the benefits of aloe in treating serious conditions, such as dandruff, eczema, psoriasis, genital herpes, skin ulcers, canker sores, according to the Mayo Clinic. Since aloe has antioxidant properties, it helps in quick healing of the skin after sunburns. Due to its greasy nature, aloe is a perfect moisturizer for oily skin and can even be applied on cuts and wounds as an aftershave. It can improve skin inflammation, itchiness, or blistering and scar marks.

Aloe vera gel is rich in Auxin and Gibberellins hormones, which have wound healing and anti-inflammatory properties. Giberellin acts as a growth hormone, which helps in the growth of new cells while allowing the skin to heal naturally with least scarring.

Improves Peridontal Diseases
Aloe vera works well for patients suffering from gum diseases. A Journal of Ethnopharmacology study claims that aloe is helpful in the treatment of gingivitis and periodontitis and reduces gum inflammation, swelling, and bleeding. It has antiseptic and antifungal properties that help patients suffering from cracked or split mouth corners, apthous ulcers, or denture stomatitis.

Boosts Heart Health
aloe vera for cardio health
Aloe vera gel is known to improve blood quality and circulation in the body. It lowers cholesterol and total triglycerides for those with elevated levels. Aloe is far safer than statin drugs to lower cholesterol. According to a clinical study published in Angiology journal, aloe vera helps reduce fat levels in people with high cholesterol, helping reduce fatty deposits as well as blood clots in the arteries. The research notes that diabetic patients benefit the most as far as improvement in cholesterol level is concerned from aloe vera, though the reason is yet to be determined.

Promotes Hair Growth
If you are distressed with falling hair, try aloe for hair health. Aloe vera is known to prevent hair fall and promote hair health. According to Hawaii researchers, aloe contains proteolitic enzymes that are directly linked to hair growth, as they remove dead skin cells on the scalp, which might be clogging hair follicle and preventing proper passage of nutrients in the hair. Its keratolic action breaks down the dead cells on the scalp, thus allowing for hair growth.

Moreover, aloe's alkalizing properties can bring the hair and scalp’s pH to a more desirable level, helping in hair growth. Its anti-puritic properties can help prevent dandruff and heal itching and dryness in the hair. Aloe for hair can be used as a great conditioning agent, which hydrates and moisturizes the hair and promotes their growth, adding strength and luster to hair.

Coconut oil benefits are aplenty. If you can make coconut oil at home, nothing better than that!

I was never an admirer of coconut unless I realized how beneficial it was for overall health. There was a time I would not touch coconut and hated its very taste.

parle coconut cookies recipe

Now, times have changed and I am experimenting with coconut in the kitchen ever since I came across the umpteen coconut benefits.

In fact, every single part of coconut can be put to use. There are plenty of coconut oil uses that will leave you surprised.

When processing coconut oil at home, you will first get homemade coconut milk, which makes a great flavoring agent for most south Indian recipes.

Coconut oil is the most versatile of all other types of oil -used in infant food, nutritional formulas for patients, food preparation, skin problem remedy, among others.

It has plenty of health benefits, but should be used in moderation, as excess may cause gastrointestinal problems and diarrohea.

If used in moderation, coconut oil benefits health in more ways than one. It is known to
  • improve digestion
  • strengthen immunity
  • help in weight loss
  • slow down aging process
  • prevent arthritis and other joint problems
  • boost heart health
  • removes wrinkles and gives your skin that much-needed glow
  • aids memory
However, research is still under way to establish the link between coconut and the aforementioned health benefits. Extra virgin coconut oil is rich in saturated fats, but since this fat is natural and not hydrogenated, it can be treated healthier than most other oils that contain artificial fats.

Skin Care
benefits of coconut oil
Homemade coconut oil benefits for skin are numerous. If you can make coconut oil a regular part of your skincare regimen, you can derive several benefits. It works as a natural skin moisturizer. Rich in vitamins and fatty acids, coconut oil is great for healthy, soft skin. You would be surprised to know that coconut oil can even help fight acne, since it has antimicrobial properties.

Lauric acid in coconut oil works great for skin disorders. In fact, your body turns lauric acid into monolauring that is associated with anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties. One research report claims that virgin coconut oil can help reduce wrinkles on your face and give your skin that much-needed natural glow.

Homemade coconut oil benefits baby skin immensely. This is one reason I have tried to make it for my 7-month-old niece.

It is better to use coconut oil for babies, instead of other skin creams or moisturizers, since this does not have any side effects.

By using only a small amount of coconut oil made at home, you can not only avoid skin rashes, pimples, and acne, but also avoid the use of hidden chemicals in lotions and face creams, which can be harmful/ irritating to your skin.

Since coconut oil is rich in antioxidants and resistant to oxidation, it can be used as a face product a few times a week to reduce wrinkles caused by oxidative stress.

Solid coconut oil can be whipped to make body butter, so you don't need a body moisturizer. Homemade extra virgin coconut oil will serve that purpose and give you naturally beautiful, beneficial results. You can store it in a jar and use it whenever you feel like pampering your skin with nature's bounty.

Eye Makeup Remover
I have always struggled to remove eye makeup, since I don't want to use any chemical makeup remover creams/lotions on my eyes. However, to my surprise, coconut oil works great as an eye makeup remover, since it is completely safe and gentle for sensitive eye area.

I use it regularly now and find that it takes makeup off much better than chemical makeup removers. All you need to do is simply dab a small amount of coconut oil on to a cotton pad and rub it gently on the area where you want to remove the makeup. And you are done! It will not only remove the makeup, but also leave the area moisturized!

I was so happy to get this homemade coconut oil feedback from Anita Chahal aunty on my birthday.

Since coconut oil contains natural saturated fat, consumption of this oil does not pose the risk of increase in LDL levels. In fact, a number of studies conducted in the Pacific Islands claim that inhabitants in these areas, who get almost 30-60 percent of their calorific intake from coconut oil, have non-existent rates of cardiovascular diseases. Further, coconut reduces incidence of injury in arteries, thus helping avoid atherosclerosis.

Works Magic for Weight Loss
As coconut milk is easily digested, unlike other types of milk, it stimulates the body's metabolism and is easily converted into energy, thus enhancing physical or athletic performance, so you can work out for longer periods in order to shed those extra pounds. Coconut is also known to boost functioning of thyroid gland.

Promotes Hair Growth
coconut oil for hair
Coconut oil helps renew and revitalize your hair. I have always cherished long, beautiful hair but hardly did I realize that coconut was so beneficial for hair. Coconut for hair was my grandma's favorite, who always advised me to use it for good hair health, but I never tried it until I read some research papers proving the coconut oil-hair connection.

  • This oil gives your hair deep conditioning.
  • Vitamin E in coconut strengthens hair follicles, filling up hollow hair shafts, which gives volume to your hair.
  • Using coconut oil hair mask will help hair retain hydration and moisture, preventing it from looking dull or dried out.
Coconut Oil Benefits Abound
Take some homemade coconut oil in your palm and rub it on your scalp. Then wrap your hair with a towel or shower cap for a few minutes and then shampoo your hair. Doing this twice a week will give you stronger, voluminous, more vibrant hair. Thus it can be concluded that coconut for hair is a blessing.

Coconut oil for Alzheimer's, Parkinson's
Processing coconut oil at home is known to produce a different type of fat, known as caprylic acid, which is broken down into ketone bodies. It is these ketones that are claimed to provide alternative sources of energy to the brain cells of Alzheimer's patients that have lost the ability to use glucose.

More research is under way to establish a the benefits of coconut oil for Alzheimer's, though many online reviews from patients claim that they have benefited tremendously from the use of coconut oil.

Similar are the claims for Parkinson's patients. Coconut oil has improved quality of life of some patients suffering from Parkinson's disease, with claims abound that virgin coconut oil has helped them speak louder and clearer, walk faster, stand straighter, indulge in several chores that they couldn't do otherwise, made them calmer than ever and less nervous.

Coconut Oil for Colon Cancer
The lauric acid content in extra virgin coconut oil kills colon cancer cells.
It works by poisoning cancer cells by "unleashing profound oxidative stress while strongly reducing their levels of glutathione - otherwise needed by cancer cells as a safeguard from the increased oxidative stress. (Source)
