Quick Oil-Free Diet Snacks With Flattened Rice (Poha)

oats poha oil free snack
Oil free diet snacks are a favorite with me. You can munch on them whevever you wish to.

A hot cup of tea always comes in as a great accompaniment.

I love tea and pair it with crunchy cookies. But sometimes I do love to munch on this healthy chiwda snack...

The best thing about this simple oil free diet snack is that it is quick to process.

In fact, the diet snack recipe is all about:

  • gathering the ingredients
  • dry roasting them
  • tempering them with carom seeds and curry leaves to enjoy an aromatic snack that is high in fiber and calories

This diet snack recipe is extremely simple and nutritious with a blend of healthy ingredients, viz. fiber-rich flattened rice and oats, nutritious peas and peanuts/almonds, and aromatic carrom seeds.

 Ingredients of diet snack

 1 cup Poha (rice flakes)
1/4th cup oats
little salt
corn flakes or mixture - 3 tbsp
Dry peas (optional)- 2 tbs
Roasted peanuts (I didn't use, as they raise bad cholesterol)
1/2-1 tsp of oil (I used olive oil)
1/2 tsp carom seeds (ajwain)
raisins and dry fruit of your choice

oats poha ratio
Process
Dry roast Poha (it will take some time..keep stirring, else poha will burn out easily), set aside.
Dry roast groundnuts and any other dry fruit that you wish to use (no need to roast raisins).
I roasted oats for a minute. But it breaks easily. So no need to roast oats.
Take oil in a separate pan, add carom seeds..let them splutter for a second, add salt, turmeric....add all the nuts and poha and oats...give it a good mix.
Add any mixture that you may like.
If you want, you may add chat masala as well at the end for that tangy taste!!

Can we use the soaked water for millets? Does millet need to be soaked?

Do millets contain anti-nutrients? Yes, they do. In fact, all whole grains, including oats, contain phytates, which bind to minerals and make their absorption difficult for the body.  Soaking is the first step toward reducing anti-nutrients from millets. Soak for at least 6-8 hours to make digestion easier. Discard the soaked water and then proceed to the next step of cooking.
